"So... you were... y'know... a soldier?"
"Yes."
"Could you tell me about it?"
"What would I tell you about it?"
"Dunno. Stories? You gotta have stories."
"Not that many, really."
"Well, were you ever scared? Like... of the dark? Dark's pretty scary."
"When I was your age? Yeah. But after that... you kinda learn to appreciate it."

Nights are simple. Quiet, calm, stressless. That's why you use them to rest.

------

Military folks out there - I admit I have no idea what the uniform policy is. I asked around and got conflicting answers about where the nametag is placed on combat gear and how to correctly write a lieutenant rank on one, so sorry if I messed that up. Thankfully, Vartan's our only ex-pro-military guy, so there's not much to screw up.

Gee... it's still weird whenever I remember Vartan's actually a last name...

I should write more Kid!Colby interactions with the team. They're too much fun.

I love the peaceful look on his face!

*Also if you have question regarding Army uniform please ask away.*

:D

Very sweet are those short reprieves that soldiers get between times of action.

Excellent pic!

Indeed. Even though, switching onto an adveturing globetrotting team didn't really help to improve his resting times...

Well, if any details are "wrong," then you could just handwave them as being the way uniforms are designed in that universe.

How you do footwear for different species is always interesting. Love the night sky, how'd you do that?

Well, considering that military unit doesn't exist in our universe, I'll be waving my hand like a damn Jedi went orchestra conductor.

I'm proud to say I was praised by a friend who's usually a harsh gear critic and who said, surprised, that I designed functioning, believable hoofwear. Yay! (Now I go slink in the corner shame for boasting on the internets).
Sky's easy peasy, have a brush, set on scatter, scatter like crazy, add a glowy effect and bam, you're done. Photoshop probably did more work than I in that department ^^;

Ooh! Ooh! Can the universe at least have a Seal Team 6? They can be actual seals! :XD:

And thanks for the tip. I just lost Photoshop though, so I'm trying my hand at Gimp. Learning curve time. :\

I'm...actually not sure where seals stand in our evolution theory.
Must check!

No time like learning curve time ;) Not sure if Gimp has any scattering tools.

Seals evolved from monkeys!

I haven't checked for scattering yet.

I have watched you almost the complete time, while you were drawing this picture but it still amazes me when I look at the finished piece now nonetheless. The amount of details is just incredibly high. Especially on Vartans uniform and gear. All the pockets and the details like stitchings, the armour on his hooves and all that. I like the style of his clothes here at all. It kinda fits him...in a way.
I also love the background and the atmosphere you create with the landscape under the calm and starry nightsky. The light at the far horizont with some clouds, the valley and the big rocks next to it. Really nice composition that could have two meanings, depending on the daytime.
It looks like Vartan is enjoying the calm during his nightwatch in there too. Really fascinating and just brilliant artwork.
